Tip’s for Travelling with Children

YAY! School’s are almost finishing, some already have!

Many families will be heading of to the airport with excited children and excited husbands in tow. Or if they are like my Hubby he will be grumpy all the time and moan until we land at the otherside!

We have been travelling with Bear since he was 18 months old and Bell was 8 months. So my tip’s are a mix of ages from 8 months to 5 years.

Here are my top tip’s for travelling with children.

  1.  When Booking your holiday, select a night time flight. Why are you mad I hear you say? Yes I thought that too when somebody suggested flying at night BUT oh my goodness it was great Bear and Bell slept most of the flight! Which meant I managed to get some shut eye to, by that a eye half open to make sure Bear didn’t jump up and down and cause havoc.
  2. On the plane try and pre-book your seat’s you will be able to book your seats to be near the toilets (I know but if you have a child who is just toilet trained it will help) or near a exit if you have a baby so you can be first off the plane.
  3. Book valet parking if you are driving, you can drive straight up to the airport door unload and walk in and not worry about parking your car . And it is also brought back when you land. So easy with children!
  4. Pack Plenty of snacks! You can not take drink’s through the security area unless its baby milk or a prescription. Be prepared to be ask to try it too! Baby milk tastes awful! Packing plenty of snack’s will keep little ones distracted whilst you queue up and go through the check points
  5. Wrap up small toys with very few bits, We love the 99p shop for this. It is great idea for children as they won’t know what they have got and it will keep them busy for about 10 minutes.
  6. Pack books, coloring books and stickers so so handy!
  7. Change of clothes, make sure they are easy to get off and on. Also wear layers as aeroplanes and the airport can go from hot to cold due to the air conditioning
  8. Changing baby in the toilet of a plane is very tight. So just take a Clean nappy and wipes, If baby needs a change of clothes (we have all been there!) strip them down to the nappy and get them dressed in the seat instead its a bit more spacious. Also change baby just before you board especially if its a short flight, baby should be fine. Also have more nappies than what you may need as you could be delayed.
  9. Ensure Ipads/ tablets are well charged, short flights seem not to put on any movies.
  10. If you do, do a night flight change your Little one’s in to their pajamas just before you board the plane, as you will be landing at night time, if a short flight, and when you get to the hotel you can just put them to bed without having to change them. Also if they need a change of clothes you can just put them in the clothes they were wearing.
  11. If your child is old enough I would say 4 plus. Encourage them to do small jobs at home to get some holiday spending money for the airport or whilst on holiday. It will make them appreciate it more.

Dear Bear … (End of term)

How is it the end of term already?

This year has flown by. This time last year we were saying goodbye to your amazing pre-school teachers ready to spend summer together before  you started on your Reception class adventure.

You have graduated from Reception and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and you are now ready for some serious but fun learning, in your next class.

Your Reception Class adventure is now over the next school chapter will be opening after the summer holiday’s. 6 whole weeks of not dashing about and chilling out.

Mummy will be working two day’s a week over the holiday’s but luckily you can come with me, but we will be going out  doing some things with the little baby I look after.

The day’s I am not working we will be having lazy mornings, and fun day’s out which will be a bit more suitable for you and your sister.

I bet you these  6 weeks will go so fast, we will be finding things to do with Dinosaurs as that is what you are learning about next term, we will also be finding some fun things to do with Space, the weather and Woodlands as that is what you will be doing in Year One.

Your year one teacher’s seem amazing you have one teacher Two day’s a week who has been teaching over 10 years and the other three day’s a newly qualified teacher, who used to be a teaching assistant. You will also having a Teaching Assistant too!

I can’t put into words how proud I am of you, you are such a caring, loving, polite and handsome young man. Your teachers say you are a pleasure to have in the classroom and you are helpful and caring too.

I am so excited for your Year one adventure, I hope it is as magical as your Reception adventure was.

Lot’s of Love

Mummy

P.s I know a Auntie who has also missed you too whilst you been at school and she can not wait to spend some quality time with her favorite and only Nephew

Take me back to

Take me back to the clear Blue seas and the clear blue skies.

Look at the sea, the clear blue sea was amazing. I have traveled a lot, I’ve seen the  Caribbean, I have sailed the Caribbean sea. I have been to Miami, I have visited Disney land. I have been to Jersey, France, Portugal and Zante.

I have been to the Canary Islands, Ibiza and am of to Majorca soon!

I have the travelling bug and have done since I was tiny. I love to see the world. It opens your eyes to so many experiences and adventures. I am so pleased I have the opportunity to explore the world with Bear and Bell, They are so so  lucky to have this amazing experience.

I am sure they won’t remember many of the place’s they have been but with Photo’s they will have some wonderful memories to look back on.

I don’t think just sitting by the pool is a good idea especially when children’s minds are constantly wanting to explore and find out more. We try and do one visit to a church or some thing which we can create a learning experience.

But yes I do like sitting by a pool!

Kids clubs yes but not all the time, a holiday is about spending time as a family in our busy lives. Please do not get me wrong we do have family time during the week but it sometimes gets missed with so much going on. Birthday parties and work commitments.

Here is my Bucket list for places I really would love to go

  • Thailand – have you seen the beaches there?
  • Morocco – For the food and the beaches
  • Australia – I have no idea why, but the land of down under seems to attract me.
  • New Zealand – The islands looks amazing
  • Italy
  • Holland

Place’s I currently won’t go are

  • Egypt
  • Turkey

Why? There is so much trouble out there and the military  are trying to take control of Turkey. I am sure in a few weeks/Months or even years I shall change my mind but at the current time I will be avoiding. Even though I would love to see the Pyramids!

Eating Fruit and Veg

They have changed it again! How many Fruit and Veg should we be eating a day?

In 2014 we should all of been eating at least 5 a day. Now in 2016 less than 3 years later it has now gone up to 7 a day.

I hear you say 7 a day! I don’t even manage that myself let alone the children! We manage at least 4-5 a day.

We have started to encrease the amount of Fruit and Veg we eat as a family, and not just one colour of Fruit and veg the mix of diffrent colours gives diffrent benefits to you and your child.

A potion size for a adult and child is actually the same size as your hand scrunched up into a ball. That is how much veg, fruit, pasta, ,meat etc you should actually be eating and some people say eating up to 5 times a day too!

This week we have actually managed to eat 7-8 a day! Go me, and the children and the hubs!

Bear has eaten mostly fruit products and to be honest I don’t mind they have been lot’s of diffrent colours. Bell has eaten fruit and veg.

We have mixed the fruit and veg into diffrent way’s we eat them. There are many way’s to get fruit and veg into the diet.

Hidden Vegetables

Hubs doesn’t like corguette so I gratit into a stew. cassorole or a spag bol. This can also be used for other veg such as mushrooms, onions, leeks, peppers and tomatoes (maybe use a blender to chop the tomatoes up or it could get messy!)

Smoothies

There are so many type’s of smoothies in the shops now a day’s with a mix of fruit and veg in. Bear doesn’t like beetroot but he will drink a smoothie with beetroot in! You can also make your own from fresh fruit and veg so simple but can get expensive unless you are like me and try and catch the reduced section!

Making Kebabs

This is our favourite of all time! Great for picnic’s and for having friends around. It can be cheap or expensive depending on what fruits you choose.

Frozen or Fresh

There are so many choices of fruit and veg. You can buy frozen, fresh, tinned and Jarred. There is certainly no right or wrong choices to this. I would say check the salt and sugar level’s in the item as it can be very high!

Fruit juices

Great for children and adults alike. But as I have said check the salt and sugar levels.

Watching I can Cook On Cbeebies or other cookery programs for children.

We have had to buy the I can cook cook book as Bell and Bear love the program and the ideas are so healthy and yummy! There is also a great choice of cook books for parent’s but don’t forget many chef’s have started to produce cook books suitable for family life.

Toddler groups

Many toddler groups still have juice and biscuits. I am trying to find toddler groups in my area which do Fruit or healthier snacks instead as it will help to encourage eating fruit or a healthier snack.

I sound like the perfect parent! I am seriously not no parent is perfect!

Sunday’s have seemed to turn into sweet and popcorn day and the fruit and veg also tend to be halfed! (whoops!) We also have endless supply of ketcup and BBQ sauce in the fridge too! (and its not reduced sugar!!!!)

I am very anti adding salt into any cooking, I also try and make any cake’s we have from scratch as i know exactly what is going into it.

I have been watching lot’s of programs on what actually happen’s to our food and it is very much a eye openner. I am seriously consdiering changing our families diet to either vegan or Vegetariam but for this to work Bear needs to start eating more Veg!

Sunshine after the Rain…..

I know I have said it before but Cancer truly suck’s! Bear and Bell have truly given me plenty of sunshine through the rain, since mum passed away from cancer.

They are happy, content children. They do have tantrums, they can be horrible as they are both stubborn and there is no reasoning with them when they have their tantrums!

Bringing up stubborn children is so hard, most probley as I am stubborn too.

We now have a reward chart for good behavior and helpfulness inside and outside the home.

We have a Gro-Clock for Bear (and Bell). It is mostly for Bear as he has been waking up at 4.45am for the day. What with Bell waking up 2-3 times a night I was exhasuted! Physically and Emotionally. Things are getting so much better now we have the Gro-Clock we have set the Sun to come up at 6.30 am and it does work most day’s.

Bell is still waking up for milk but we have swapped milk for just water so hopefully in a few days or a couple of week’s she will sleep all night.

But apart from the sleeping , or lack of it they are certainly my sunshine after the rain….

Creating a space without …..

I feel sad that Bear and Bell have to share a bedroom, I would so love them to have their own personal space where they can chill-out and have their own me time. Living in a flat is so hard at time’s, especially day’s when I know Bear want’s his own space and his own time now his getting bigger.

It is also hard to think about making a lovely bedroom for a boy and girl which won’t look odd, which they won’t grow out of and especially they both will like. I choose originally half pink and half blue bedroom which was nice but Bell and Bear drew on the walls! Hubby was in charge! Now they have  white lining painted wall’s, beautiful Bunting and some of their stunning art work! It work’s really well.

20160717_52

When Bear was born I was very adamant that he wouldn’t have clothes, bedroom or bedding with character’s on such as Pepper Pig or Thomas the tank engine. I feel quite proud that he hardly had anything like that. Please do not get me wrong he had a few bit’s of Thomas the Tank clothing but that was about it. Same with Bell, she has a few Pepper Pig bits of clothing and Shoes but nothing over the top.

Please also do not get me wrong the Nightie and Pajamas draw is full of character’s such as Elsa from Frozen, Pepper pig, Spider-man and Toy story.

I don’t know why I don’t really like character clothing on children. It does look cute, but for me personally growing up their wasn’t a wide range of clothing like that, so I never had that type of clothing.

If Bell and Bear ask for something with Pepper Pig or Spider man I certainly will not say no, as it is their personal choice and I fully encourage their development of personal choice and independence.

We LOVE Books!

Who doesn’t love a good book?

I love the fact Bear and Bell are becoming right little book worms! Do you think we have too many book’s?

20160717_50

I love reading too, I can read two-three book’s a month. I read anything from Romance to Crime. Anything has started to take my fancy.

Bear and Bell could ope itn a book shop with the amount of books they have.

We are now starting to get into Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the BFG are my all time Favorites, and I remember watching the films when I was younger. Once I got older the books became even better!

I am so pleased my love of reading has rubbed of on Bell and Bear. I think it’s because I 90% of the time have something to read in my hand bag whether it’s a magazine or a book there is always something to read in the bag.

I prefer a book to a Kindle as much as I think the Kindle is a fab idea and so handy if you are travelling a lot, for me a good book with pages, a small glass of wine, some chocolate and a quite space is always a winner for me over a night out.

Now back to Bell and Bear!

We are currently reading some old school classic’s. By old school classic’s these are books I also read when I was younger.

20160717_48

We have set up a little corner in the living room especially for reading, it is in a little crany we have no idea what to do with!

After meeting with Bear’s new year 1 teacher and getting some leaflets its 100% important to read daily and for 10-15 minutes with your child, We already do this but for a bit longer!

To have space for children to write and practice writing and role play for writing.

Speak about everything and anything! I am currently reading our loud what I am writing.

So we Love reading do you? What is your favorite book?

Farmers Market

FB_20160709_13_47_37_Saved_Picture

We Love A Farmers Market!

I keep missing them though. The local farmer’s market is on the 4th Sunday of the month but with Swimming lessons and general family life it all goes so fast!

I have decided to try as much as possible to buy BRITISH and LOCAL. It is so much nicer and fresher to!

We will be starting to go strawberry picking and other Fruit and Vegetable picking over the summer so hopefully when Bear is back to school and Bell Starts Pre-school we will have a good routine going. Yes I am a bit worried that it will end up costing more but at least I will 100% know where my families food comes from and I will also be supporting the local and the whole of the UK’s farmers. Especially now we are out of the European Union, I feel now more than ever supporting the small farmers who are on our doorstep, as it will be them who suffer with the exit.

They may not be able to sell aboard for the cost it is costing now it will end up costing them a bit more which wouldn’t be good as after all they also have families to feed, their children to dress and most probleya after school club or another extra activity to do.

Cancer sucks

Here is the deal Cancer sucks! It sucks so much!
It is a horrible illness which eats away at you from the inside and sometimes the outside too, You can not have any side effects until the last minute, some times you catch it at the start. It can tear families apart, it can make families get closer.
Why am I writing about Cancer? My mum had cancer. Cancer of the bone, breast, brain and liver.
She sadly passed away after a short battle. I’ve seen things that you would not want you worse enemy to see. I have seen a dead body. My mind has seemed to block that image out. I’ve watched men, woman and children have chemo, I’ve seen people loose their hair.
I have experienced first hand that losing a mum at 26 is horrible (any age is horrible!)
She has missed out on meeting her grandson and granddaughter, she has missed my wedding day, she has missed Bears first’s and Bell’s first’s.
She has missed many birthdays and birthday parties.
I found out I was pregnant officially the day before the anniversary of her 2nd year parting I’m sure it was a sign.
So it bugs me when people moan about there mums, they should be so lucky that they are alive and want to see their grandchildren some people and grandchildren aren’t so lucky

Growing up….

I was brought up in Downham, near Lewisham London, from day one to around 6 years old of my life I had not one but two open heart operations, suffered from muscle weakness, brittle bones and wore glasses. I have been on Steroids, I have broken my leg once, can’t even remember how.
6-15 years old, I managed to avoid steroids, but had every three month check ups at GUYS Hospital for my heart, this eventually went to every 6 months to a year to none! (yay!) I feel and pulled my ligaments in my knee when I was 14 which got me out of pe!
I left school and went to college to study child care and got amazing grades. Whilst studying I worked in a health club with children aged 8-16 years old teaching games, and teaching how to use the gym equipment. I have been room supervisors and deputy manager before I became a Nanny. I have been a Nanny for 10 years now and its can be really hard work but I would not change it for the world. I am also a rainbows leads.
