Let’s talk about weaning… 

So your beautiful son or daughter has hit  6 months of age. 
It’s time to start thinking about weaning.

This journey will be messy I won’t lie. But it will be  one of the funniest adventures you will have. Some of the faces they pull will certainly make you laugh. (Photos of Bell during the weaning phase)


It could be frustrating trying to find out what type of weaning works well for your child . 

There are three types of weaning 

1- spoon feeding 

2- baby lead weaning 

3 – spoon and baby lead weaning 

Spain fed weaning is where you control feeding your child, you can use jars or make your own food. I did this type with Bear.

Baby lead weaning (BLW for short) is where you give your child some bite size food and they have a go at feeding themselves. We did this type of weaning with Bell.

BLW and spoon fed is a mixture of both and could work well with a busy family life.

The important thing about weaning is to encourage your child to try lots of new flavours. We used jars with Bear but I found they actually didn’t taste that nice and he wasn’t that keen so we ended up blending up fruit and vegetables from our meal and freezing and heating up when we needed them. Which he loved. He also loved Ella’s kitchen pouches these say they are home made and they taste yum! 

There are many types of snacks too available on the high street from bread sticks to rice cakes. 

Bell was BLW she helped herself to my Yorkshire pudding a week away from 6 months so I left her to it and she did really well. 

Some great foods to try pureered or mashed are 
Carrots

Bananas

Parsnip

Broccoli 

Califlour

Apple

Pea

You can try mixing them together too.

And there are a lot more fruit and vegetables  too! 

Baby lead weaning foods 

Is everything and anything. We did avoid peanuts until 2 years old though and shellfish until a 1 year old though. 

I also suggest sitting with your child and eat with them, it encourages good eating habits and it’s also a great social experience . But I understand this isn’t suitable for all when they are so young. 

If making your own food or if buying your own food (jars, pouches) check salt and sugar contents you will actually be surprised at the amount of sugar and salt many meals contain these. 

I was told by my Health visitor to skip baby rice as it isn’t beneficial for the child. 

Best bibs I found are the Tommee Tippee ones with the pouch to collect the food unless you have a dog or a cat who acts like a vacuume cleaner than I would not worry about the mess on the floor too much! 

Notes: please never leave your child unsupervised to eat and ensure that they can support their head. Also do not put anything ie baby rice or porridge in their bottle this can be a chocking hazard.
